Communication Skills for IT Professionals

July 17th, 2009 by Shannon | Comments Off | Filed in Ecourse, Training

Communications Skills for IT Professionals is a 4 week, self-paced e-class designed for the IT Professional who already has a lot of their plate and doesn’t have a lot of time, but wants to improve their communication skills and, consequently, their job performance.

Each week, we take on a topic and cover it from the perspective of an IT Professional and the situations we often find ourselves in within our own companies and with our external customers. We cover communication from the standpoint of communicating our message, building relationships, and getting results.

Topics include:

Week 1: The Two “A”s – Audience and Attitude

The attitude we bring to our communication influences the attitude of our audience. And, the attitude our audience has influences how our message is received. During this week, we’ll talk about how we can be aware of the two A’s and factor them into our communications.

Week 2: Person-to-Person Communication

Whether it’s in our own offices or on-site with a customer, each of us in IT have face-to-face interactions with our customers. This week we’ll take a look at what influences face-to-face communication (body language, tone of voice, and words) and how just small changes can make a big difference. We’ll also cover several tips on building our relationships with our customers so that communication becomes easier.

Week 3: Effective Phone Communication

Building on week 1 and week 2, we delve into our phone conversations and how we set and project the attitude and tone of our communications with our tone of voice and words. We’ll also talk about respecting our customer’s time, building relationships over the phone, and when phone communication isn’t enough.

Week 4: Effective Email Communication

Email is so common these days, yet the same set of rules that apply to sending email to our friends and family don’t always apply to sending emails to our co-workers, peers, customers/clients, and vendors. In our final week, we’ll be covering email communication and how we can be more effective with it in our IT lives.

After you complete all four weeks of material, you’ll receive a PDF and printed ‘Certificate of Completion’ that you can add to your portfolio and personnel file.

Format: Lessons are delivered via email each week, with links to related mp3 audio and/or streaming video files. You’ll need an internet connection to access course materials.

Time Commitment: Each week’s content is broken up into 2-3 blocks that each take 20 minutes or less to go through. So you’re looking at 40-60 minutes of content each week, broken up into smaller chunks so it’s easier to work it into your already busy day.

The class is self-paced, so you can work it into your week as best suits your commitments and schedule.  It is also okay to spread the material over a longer period; it just is delivered over the course of 4 weeks.

Cost: $147/person for all four weeks

Registration is now closed – class is in session. Registration will open again two weeks before our next class.
